In Vienna, changing exhibitions take place throughout the year in the countless museums and galleries. Nowhere else is there so much culture in such a small space. Most of them are concentrated in Vienna’s city center. Here is an excerpt of the museums that are always hosting current exhibitions. The ranking is based on the most visitors:
1. art history museum (KHM)
In addition to the permanent exhibition of the old masters such as Bruegel, Rubens, Titian, Dürer, Rembrandt, there are also always changing exhibitions. The picture gallery is divided into halls according to painters in order to give a comprehensive overview. The exhibition “Higher Powers” will take place from May 18, 2021 until August 15, 2021. This deals with the turning to higher powers in most different cultural circles and over most different epochs.
2. belverede museum
The permanent exhibition in the Upper Belvedere is dedicated to Gustav Klimt and his golden works and also from his early phase, which was still impressionistic. The most famous is the painting “The Kiss”, which every one of the approximately 1.7 million visitors a year wants to see. The Belvedere always hosts temporary exhibitions, for example, since February 9, 2021 , an exhibition of Baroque landscape paintings by the Bohemian painter Johann Jakob Hartmann.
3. albertina
The permanent exhibition of the Albertina is the collection of the Batliner couple – Monet to Picasso – which is located on the 2nd floor and can be permanently admired. Currently, there is an interesting photo-portrait exhibition Faces, which will be shown until May 24, 2021 . From March 26, 2021 Albrecht Dürer, Paul Klee and many others entice with an overview of landscape painting.
4. Leopold Museum in the MuseumsQuartier
Vienna around 1900 is the name of the permanent exhibition at the Leopold Museum, which is devoted primarily to Egon Schiele, but also to Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoscha . Starting April 16, 2021, the temporary exhibition “Body Eletric” will follow, featuring drawings by Erwin Osen (1891-1970), who was a companion of Egon Schiele.
5. natural history museum (NHM)
In addition to the approximately 100,000 display objects that are permanently exhibited in the Natural History Museum, there are always exciting special exhibitions. And how could it be otherwise, it is of course about nature. Currently, you can see the exhibition “Expiration date .- When food becomes garbage” until May 16, 2021.
6. technical museum (TGM)
At 22,000m², the Technical Museum is one of the larger museums in Vienna and is located near Schönbrunn Palace just outside the city center. It provides exceptional insights for all technology fans and is also very popular with families with children because of the “hands-on” opportunities to learn to understand technology. A very timely exhibition on “Artificial Intelligence” will take place until summer 2022 .
7. army history museum (HGM)
This museum gives an overview of several centuries of war history in the Habsburg Empire . The slogan “Wars belong in museums” is very appropriate regarding coming to terms with the past, especially the 20th century. with both world wars. The museum building is impressively designed in the style of historicism with Moorish-Byzantine style elements . It is located in the 3rd district, not too far from the Belvedere Palace.
8. mumok – Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna
Modern art of the 20. and 21st c. is illuminated at the mumok, which includes Pop Art, Photorealism, Fluxus, Viennese Actionism . Representatives of these styles are Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch . Currently, the “Exhibits Andy Warhol” takes place until May 30, 2021 .
9th Museum of Applied Arts (MAK)
The Museum of Applied Arts has focused on art and design , specifically on Works of art of the Viennese Art Nouveau. Crafts of the Wiener Werkstätte can be seen here. From bentwood furniture by Thonet, to furniture, glass, porcelain, silver and textile. A major work is the design of the frieze for the Palais Stoclet in Brüsse, which was created by Gustav Klimt. The show collection Vienna around 1900 is permanent, while there are always constantly changing special exhibitions.
10th Jewish Museum
In Palais Eskeles in Dorotheergasse, not far from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Jewish Museum presents a comprehensive overview of Jewish life in Vienna in the 20th century. On the upper floor there is a collection of objects from Max Berger, a collector of Judaica. On the second floor there are temporary exhibitions – currently until June 27, 2021 “Wiener in China” Fluchtpunkt Shanghai.
