Ice Skating in Vienna – the Most Beautiful Ice Rinks

During winter, Vienna offers a variety of ice rinks that attract both locals and tourists, creating a special winter atmosphere in the city. The two most famous ice rinks are the Wiener Eistraum at Rathausplatz and the Wiener Eislaufverein near Stadtpark.

Wiener Eistraum

The Wiener Eistraum at Rathausplatz is a highlight of the winter season and is considered one of the largest and most beautiful open-air ice rinks in Europe. It usually opens at the end of January and spans several thousand square meters, including winding ice paths that lead through the Rathauspark. Visitors can skate in a dreamlike setting right in front of the illuminated City Hall. There are several rinks for beginners and advanced skaters, as well as huts offering warm drinks, punch, and snacks.

Wiener Eislaufverein

The Wiener Eislaufverein, founded in 1867, is one of the oldest ice rinks in Vienna and is centrally located near Stadtpark. It is very popular among locals and is often visited by school classes, families, and athletic skaters. The rink is open daily during the winter season and offers a traditional atmosphere with a view of the city. Unlike the Wiener Eistraum, the Eislaufverein usually opens earlier in the season and attracts visitors throughout the entire winter.

Other Ice Rinks

In addition to the main rinks, there are smaller ice skating opportunities, e.g., in shopping centers or on temporarily set up ice rinks in various districts. These rinks are ideal for a short ice skating trip and are often suitable for beginners as well.

The Viennese ice rinks offer a wonderful opportunity to experience the city in a sporty and romantically wintry way. Ice skating in Vienna combines exercise, fun, and the unmistakable flair of the Austrian capital in winter.
